Ammonium Purpurate, commonly known as Murexide, is a purple-red crystalline compound and an ammonium salt of purpuric acid. It is primarily used as a complexometric indicator in analytical chemistry, particularly for the titration of calcium, magnesium, and rare earth metals.

Murexide exhibits vivid color changes depending on the pH and the presence of metal ions:

  • In acidic solution: Red-violet
  • With calcium or magnesium ions (alkaline solution): Blue or purple

It is moderately soluble in water and practically insoluble in alcohol. Murexide is sensitive to light and should be stored in dark, airtight containers. It is generally stable under dry conditions but can slowly degrade if exposed to moisture or strong acids/bases.
