This compound is highly hygroscopic and deliquescent, meaning it readily absorbs moisture from the atmosphere and can liquefy upon prolonged exposure to humid air. It is highly soluble in water, and its dissolution is strongly exothermic, releasing significant heat.

Calcium chloride dihydrate is widely used in industrial and commercial applications, including de-icing, dust control, refrigeration brines, oil drilling fluids, and concrete acceleration.
