Zinc Cyanide

Zinc Cyanide is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula Zn(CN)₂, appearing as a white, amorphous to crystalline powder. It is sparingly soluble in water but readily dissolves in solutions containing excess cyanide ions due to complex formation. The compound is primarily used in electroplating processes, where it serves as a source of zinc in cyanide-based plating baths, producing smooth and uniform metal coatings.

Zinc cyanide is chemically stable under controlled conditions but reacts with acids to release highly toxic hydrogen cyanide (HCN) gas, making it a hazardous substance that requires strict handling and safety precautions. It is also used in organic synthesis and chemical intermediates, though its applications are limited due to toxicity concerns.

Because of its high toxicity, zinc cyanide must be handled only with proper protective equipment in well-ventilated environments. It should be stored in tightly sealed containers, away from acids, moisture, and incompatible materials to prevent decomposition and exposure risks.
